The NSC Cruising Fleet’s mission is to create a supportive, fun, and educational environment for cruising sailors on all skill levels. The Cruising Fleet has grown dramatically in the last three years and has over 30 Cruising events scheduled for 2008. All members of NSC, whether racers or cruisers, are welcome to attend Cruising events. Activities include casual Racing, where repartee and having fun are the only rules; Sailing events to various locations on the lake, such as to the dam and other locations; Moon light sailing and sleepover events; Raft-ups on the water; Picture Day, where members get their picture taken on their sailboats; the Fall Colors cruise, where members can enjoy the beauty of Lake Nockamixon in the fall from their sailboats; and other events.
The cruising fleet has organized the first NSC bareboat charter on the Chesapeake Bay for its members that will take place September 5-7, 2008. Club members will charter five or six 35-35 foot sailboats and sail over a weekend from Rock Hall, MD to Annapolis, MD and return. NSC members who do not want to charter but want to join us on their sailboats are welcome to meet up with us on the Chesapeake Bay and be part of the NSC flotilla.
The Cruising fleet attempts to improve the skill level of our members by having various skills events throughout the season that are free for all members. Skills Training Events for 2008 include Rules of the Road training, Man Overboard Training, Sail Trim Training, and Lines and Knots (Marlinspike) training, and an Introduction to Racing for cruisers.
We also have social events such as the Spring Mixer, to kick off our season; the Fall Awards Banquet, to celebrate the end the season; Meet your neighbor day, which is a progressive dock party where we go to one boat for appetizers, another for desert, etc.; and Wednesday night informal dinners that occur throughout much of the year.
The cruising fleet also offers mast raising and launch assistance in the spring, and mast lowering and haul-out assistance in the fall.
Cruising Fleet members are also invited to participate in the “low-key” racing events, such as the Wednesday Night sails and the NSC “Invitational Regattas.”
